Another scam that is highly profitable involves so-called “tax relief companies.” You see the ads on the late night shows. They promise to settle your tax bill for pennies on the dollar. They make you think that IRS agents are just sitting around waiting for these companies to call the IRS and offer $100 to settle a $10,000 debt. Nonsense. Tax relief agencies pull the same scams as the infomercials - they get as large a payment out of you as possible and then in many cases offer little or no services or benefit.
Getting IRS tax penalties and interest abated is a tough, uphill climb and your request needs to be supported by serious documentation and a well written narrative explaining why you feel you are entitled to this relief. To do justice to this effort over the phone with a commissioned salesperson is inconceivable.
The other chief selling point for tv tax relief companies is the notion that the IRS will settle for much less than they claim you actually owe, i.e. pennies on the dollar. This is accomplished, in most cases, through selling you their offer in compromise program. Applying for the offer in compromise requires a lot of legwork and paperwork. Once again, for this to be done over the phone by a novice salesperson is preposterous. In many cases the client will send them $5000 only to be delayed and finally terminated without the offer in compromise ever submitted. Asking for your money back is a joke. Better plan - look in the phone book in your city for a licensed attorney or certified public accountant who regularly represents clients before the IRS. You will get much better service and if you are unhappy you have state watchdog agencies to assist you. |
